Listen to what you hear when nothing is heard
The way experimental music approaches the score is a particular use of the language that brings it closer to the poem. Clara de Asís explores the link between experimental contemporary music, non-traditional notation and poetry through a selection of sound works approaching silence. Featuring pieces by Ryoko Akama, Patrick Farmer, Jürg Frey, Eva-Maria Houben, Catherine Lamb, and Michael Pisaro.
Simon Garrette
The Silences of Reading
Piece elaborated from a selection of excerpts taken from the sound archives of the cipm library.

See what is said
Performance filmed, 2016 (HD video, 8’30)
See what is said is a filmed performance performed with Noha El Sadawy, young deaf woman, during the rehearsals of the orchestra of the College of Geneva. Placed next to the conductor at each rehearsal, the signer looked for ways to describe, tell, and comment on the orchestra in sign language.
Orchestra conducting and sign language are two languages that have nothing to do with it; they inhabit two antagonistic worlds: music and silence. However, there are similarities between these two figures, they share at the same time a precise structure, technique, coded, and a large part of sensitive expression.
This video presents a silent montage with respect to the “inductive” gesture of the conductor who impels the sound, and the “receptive” gesture of the sign language that describes the image of repetition.
PERFORMANCES
Alessandro Bosetti
I’m not here to talk
During the 4 days of the conference “Silence”, the sound artist Alessandro Bosetti will always be present in the conference room and around. It will record fragments of speech – not necessarily the most relevant – or silence. Alessandro will not be here to talk. He will remain silent throughout the project. Think of him as a kind of wedding photographer, sometimes discreet, sometimes intrusive. Do not try to talk to him, he will not answer. On Saturdays, from these recordings, he will make a performance.
David Christoffel and Maël Guesdon
Close the quotation marks
Dry or talkative, the injunctions to silence always make noise. But what is it to silence? How? Why ? In which order ? For what purpose and how long? That’s it. Silence pierced the speaking subject. Is it temporary, balanced, natural? Is it right ?
