Individual Observation on RRS – Listen at
Ryoko Akama makes everyday objects, toys and old materials resonate acoustically in her performance creating situations related to herself, space, materials and the public. All the movements of the objects generate some kind of sound, although some are inaudible to us according to the scale and acoustics of the space. This phenomenon of acting is intentional and he is especially interested in not hearing “almost nothing” and not seeing “almost nothing”. Sight plays a role as important as hearing in this empirical space. However, Akama changes the focus a bit in the recording sessions with other artists. In these, the objects that emit very weak sounds are usually left out of the instrumental selection, since they prefer to work with elements that produce stronger sounds.
Ryoko loves automated objects with motors and magnets that emit subtle and beautiful noises. The production of this piece draws attention to them. Akama plays one after another surrounded by three microphones. There are times when it makes two or three objects interact and collaborate simultaneously. The author tried to record the auditory observation of particular objects that are usually seen only at her concerts. He wants us to imagine what those objects that produce such complex sounds are. They are the ones who make music.
